City of Covington Mayor Sam Ramsey, seated, signing a Proclamation at City Hall designating September as Square Dance Month in Covington. Square Dancing is the US National Folk Dance; and there are 2 active clubs in Newton County, the Newton Hayriders and the Pi R Squares. On hand at the signing were dancers from both clubs: Larry Patrick, Ruth Patrick, Harry Driscoll, Debbi Driscoll, Bill Buchanan, Mary Jane Howard, John Ford, Voncile Ford, Marie Gibson, Evelyn Norman, David Norman, Andy Autry, Charles Patterson, and Alton Cochran.
